Three thousand prisoners are the latest beneficiary of the new presidential pardon in a bid to reduce the prison population. Zimbabwe was having 22 000 prisoners but have the capacity to accommodate 17 000. So the presidential pardon will go a long way in relieving pressure on resources such as food, water and blankets.
400 prisoners were released from Harare while the rest were released from other provinces. The requirements are as follows, all prisoners with non violent crimes and have served two third of their sentence qualifies while female prisoners who have served a third qualifies. Those who are on death penalty were also commuted to life in prison, those convicted of violent crimes will not benefit.
