NUST: The illusory of Technology

National University Of Science and Technology has long held the reputation as one of the best universities in Zimbabwe. If you ask any student in high school a simple question, What are your three choices of universities when you are done with your A-Level Studies? UZ, NUST will be the top choice for most students. NUST will likely score higher among science students because of its supposed Science and Technology orientation.

But a closer look at the programs, the way their systems are set up in relation to technology one would doubt if there is anything the students are benefiting from the institution. If you go to ZITF Explore, just visit their space and look at the projects they have you will be the judge. Some of the projects belong to high school and some completely copy and paste from the internet.

This might emanate from their curriculum which hasn’t been updated in many years. I will take Computer Science, for example, and look at the modules offered. It has one or two modules focusing on web development and yet the web has become a vital part of technology. A student can graduate from NUST without being able to develop a fully functional website that connects to two or more data points.

While all universities are doing online applications due to COVID, the web portal for NUST is down, from May 2021 to June 2021 the whole month the website has been down. These are some of the things that make me wonder, what type of Computer Science are they teaching.
